Biography
Manolis Vavalis is currently Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Thessaly. He is also a senior researcher at the Centre for Research and Technology – Thessaly (CERTH). Before coming to Thessaly Dr. Vavalis has been with the faculty of the Department of Computer Sciences at Purdue University and the Department of Mathematics at The University of Crete where he served as the Director of the Division of Applied & Computational Mathematics and Statistics and as the Associate Head of the Department. He has also been a Senior Researcher at the Applied and Computational Mathematics Institute and at the Computer Science Institute both at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) and at the Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI) of the Centre of Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH). He served as a member of the Steering Committee of the University of Crete and FORTH’s Computing Center and a member of the Senate of the University of Crete and the University of Thessaly. He has been participating in several EU funded R&D projects in the area of information technologies and had been coordinating few of them. He also served as EU, NSF and National proposal reviewer and project evaluator, departmental evaluator and member of International and National Scientific Committees. His current research interests are in the areas of Knowledge Management, Distributed Computing, High Performance Scientific Computing, Information Systems, Energy Systems, Numerical Analysis and Mathematical Modeling. He has published four books/monographs and over 80 technical articles and has been in the editorial board of more than 20 conferences.
